ABF's Modern, Efficient and Well Maintained Equipment Inventory

ABF's commitment to maintaining a modern and efficient fleet contributes to our outstanding safety and claim prevention record and is a key factor in our transit time consistency.

  • More than 17,000 28-foot trailers (Pups).
  • More than 2,500 city tractors.
  • More than 1,600 road tractors.
  • Routine preventive maintenance every 5,000 miles or three months for city tractors.
  • Routine preventive maintenance every 16,000 miles for road tractors.

Trailer Capacity

Most of ABF's trailers are 28 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9 feet tall. This is equivalent in size to a 26' rental truck plus another 10' rental truck with still some trailer room left over.

The entire trailer has a capacity of about 2000 cubic feet. Each linear foot is about 72 cubic feet. That is 1 foot long by 8 feet wide by 9 feet tall.

It is estimated that each linear foot of household goods weighs 500 pounds. A full trailer of household goods would weigh approximately 12,000 pounds. Although that seems like a lot of weight, the trailer can legally haul 22,500 pounds as long as it is evenly distributed throughout the trailer.

Trailer Loading

The trailers sit approximately 48 inches off the ground. ABF offers complimentary ramps where available to use while loading your trailer and are available at most ABF terminals. Ramps allow you to walk or roll a standard dolly up into the trailer. When a ramp is not available through our local terminal you may choose to rent a ramp from a local equipment rental store, or lift your items into the trailer.

You may use blocks and braces throughout the loading process. These can be nailed to the floor of the trailer and are helpful in preventing shifting. You can also use screwable hooks and eyes to assist in tying down your shipment. Many of our trailers have logistics tracking that run from floor to ceiling and offer multiple anchor points for tying down your shipment. Those trailers may be requested when scheduling your drop-off time with the origin terminal but are not guaranteed. We will put forth every effort to provide you with a trailer with tie rings but cannot guarantee them.

Did you know?

Did you know that the trailers that ABF pulls are commonly referred to as “Pups” in the freight industry. So when you see one of our tractors pulling two trailers on the highway they are actually pulling a “Set of Pups.” Throw that in your conversation next time you have a conversation with someone in the industry and they’ll know they’re talking to a pro!
