Story submitted from Washington D.C.

Nine-year-old Katya Nelson saw a picture on the front page of the Washington Post on Saturday, December 8, 2007. She asked her mother what was going on in the photograph. She and her mother, Anne Parten, then read the story together. It was the story of how the Capital Area Food Bank and other food banks across the nation are experiencing shortages. There was a call-out section that offered “ways the community could help;” and her idea was born.

Katya set up a cookie stand (despite the rain!) to raise money for the Capital Area Food Bank. She took in $103, which her mother delivered to the food bank.

It is inspiring to those of us who work in the struggle to end hunger when concerned citizens like Katya make profound statements by “doing something” to make a difference. We salute Katya’s efforts!
